From Proto-Tocharian *kenwäi (whence Tocharian A kanweṃ), from the root *kenw- (“knee”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵónu. Other cognates include Latin genū, Ancient Greek γόνυ (gónu), Old English cnēow (whence English knee).
