First attested in the Hunminjeong'eum haerye (訓民正音解例 / 훈민정음해례), 1446, as Middle Korean 뎔〮 (Yale: tyél).
Possibly from Middle Chinese 剎 (MC tsrhaet), abbreviation of 剎多羅 (MC tsrhaet ta la), ultimately borrowed from Sanskrit क्षेत्र (kṣetra). Cognate with Japanese 寺 (tera, “Buddhist temple”), which is thought to be a borrowing from an ancient Koreanic language. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
