From Old Irish rúad,[1] from Proto-Celtic *roudos (compare Welsh rhudd), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rewdʰ- (compare Ancient Greek ἐρυθρός (eruthrós), Sanskrit रुधिर (rudhirá), Old English rēad).
