From Proto-Celtic *kengeti (“tread, step, walk”), perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *(s)keng- (“limp”) (compare Old High German hinkan (“to limp”), Ancient Greek σκάζω (skázō, “I limp”) (from *skn̥gyóh₂)).
