Arabic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From the Nabataean letter 𐢄 (l, “gimel”), derived from the Phoenician letter 𐤂 (l, “gimel”), from an uncertain Egyptian hieroglyph (𓌙?). See also Classical Syriac ܓ (l, “gimel”), Hebrew ג (l, “gimel”), Ancient Greek Γ (G), Latin C and Latin G.

Pronunciation

  • It has many standard pronunciations in Modern Standard Arabic, which can also reflect the pronunciation in national varieties of Arabic:
    • IPA(key): [d͡ʒ] in most of the Arabian Peninsula, Mesopotamia, parts of the Levant, parts of Egypt and in Central Algeria.
    • IPA(key): [ʒ] in most of the Levant and most of north Africa;
    • IPA(key): [ɡ] in most of Egypt and west Yemen and parts of Oman (e.g. Muscat dialect);
