sukka
Estonian
Noun
sukka
Finnish
Etymology
From Proto-Finnic *sukka, borrowed from Proto-Norse [Term?], from Proto-Germanic *sukkaz (“sock”) (compare English sock, Swedish socka), from Latin soccus.[1] Finnic cognates include Ingrian sukka, Karelian sukka, Karelian šukka, Livvi sukku, Ludian suk, Estonian sukk, Livonian sukā and Votic sukkõ.
Pronunciation
Noun
sukka
- sock (garment covering foot)
- stocking (garment covering foot and part of leg)
- stocking (knitted hood of cotton thread which is eventually converted into an incandescent mantle for gas lighting)
Usage notes
If a distinction between socks and stockings needs to be made in Finnish, one may use lyhyt sukka (literally “short sukka”) for socks, and pitkä sukka (literally “long sukka”) for stockings.
