From Old Norse skjór, from Proto-Germanic *skaiwarō-, of uncertain ultimate origin. Possibly Proto-Indo-European *kik- (Lithuanian kḗkštas, Greek κίσσα (kíssa), Sanskrit किकिदीवि (kikidīvί, “blue jay”)). Conate with Icelandic skjór and Elfdalian stjier.
