Inherited from Old Polish pochwa, from Proto-Slavic *poxъva. Sense 1 is a semantic loan from Latin vāgīna (“scabbard”). Cognate with Belarusian по́хва (póxva), Czech pochva, and Ukrainian пі́хва (píxva).
