From Old Swedish krȳsta, from Old Norse *krjósta, from Proto-Germanic *kreustaną (“to grind”).

- to tense the muscles of the abdomen in order to expel something (usually feces or a baby); to push, to bear down
- (usually with fram) to express oneself in a strained or contrived manner
