Etymology
From Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (kirpik), Common Turkic *kirpik (“eyelash”), Proto-Turkic *kirpik (“eyelash”). Cognate with Crimean Tatar and Turkish kirpik, Chuvash хӑрпӑк (hărp̬ăk), etc.
According to Clauson, could be derived from Proto-Turkic *kirpi (“prickle, prick, thorn”), whence also kirpi (“hedgehog”).[1][2]
