Etymology 1
From Late Proto-Vietic *-haːm, from Proto-Vietic *tŋ-ʔaːm, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *[t₁]ʔaam. Cognate with Tho [Cuối Chăm] hɐːm², Chut [Rục] təŋʔaːm¹, Halang tơ'am (“molar tooth”), Pacoh tang-am (“back teeth; bottom molars”), Danau ʔɑm¹.
Insertion of initial *h in Vietic can also be seen in *huːɲ (“to kiss”) (> Vietnamese hôn), *heːt (“finished”) (> Vietnamese hết), *hanʔ (“he, she, it”) (> Vietnamese hắn), *haːr (“two”) (> Vietnamese hai), *hoːj (“foul-smelling”) (> Vietnamese hôi), *hɔːŋʔ (“river, brook”), *haːŋʔ (“to open (mouth)”).
Not derived from Chinese 頷 (MC homX), OC *[ɢ]ˤ[ə]mʔ (B-S), in spite of the similar SV reading hạm.
