Zorc (1982) also speculated that the word is possibly ultimately from Proto-Austronesian *dəŋəʀ (“to hear; sound”) on the basis that Visayan language descendants such as Aklanon dungog, Cebuano dungog, Hiligaynon dungog meaning “hearing; overhear; fame; honor; get to know by hearsay; reputation; prestige”.
