Etymology

[edit]

Generally interpreted to be a compound of ātl (“water”) +‎ xōlōtl (“male servant”).

Alternatively, the second element may be cognate with Huichol xiurí (“axolotl”). The compounding with ātl (“water”) may have originated as a disambiguation from several unrelated quasi-homonyms, such as xōlōtl (“male servant”) or Xolotl (“Xolotl”, a god).
