Finnish
Etymology
ajan (“of time”) + lasku (“counting”). Coined by Finnish explorer, historian and author Carl Axel Gottlund.
Pronunciation
Noun
ajanlasku
- chronology (science)
- Common Era
- Tämä tapahtui vuonna 1753 jälkeen ajanlaskun alun.
- This happened in the year 1753 of the Common Era.
Usage notes
- When used in specifying a year, this term is normally used with the word alku (“beginning”). Sometimes the possessive suffix -mme (“our”) is added:
- ennen ajanlaskun alkua ― before the Common Era (literally, “before the beginning of the Common Era”)
- jälkeen ajanlaskumme alun ― of the Common Era (literally, “after the beginning of our Common Era”)
- The traditional and still more common way of differentiating between the years before and of the Common Era is to refer to the birth of Christ with ennen Kristusta (“before Christ”) or jälkeen Kristuksen (“anno Domini, lit. after Christ”).
