Users that have the CheckUser privilege are able to inspect certain IP information pertaining to accused sock puppets and other disruptive use. WMF has strict guidelines on how and when this information can be accessed, and all nominees must read the entire guide before accepting a nomination.
In addition, all CheckUsers must meet the global Access to nonpublic personal data policy.
To request a CheckUser investigation, see Wiktionary:Requests for checkuser.
CheckUser policy issues
According to the global CheckUser policy, a WMF wiki can have either:
- two or more active CheckUsers chosen by the community, or
- no locally elected CheckUsers, in which case CheckUser requests are dealt with by the Wikimedia stewards.
For the purposes of that policy, "active" means the user contributed to the project in the past 12 months, and "chosen by the community" means elected by a vote with "at least 70%–80%" support and "25–30 editors' approval".
If the wiki ceases to meet the criteria for option 1 (e.g. there are only two CheckUsers and one of them makes no edits for a year), the wiki falls back to option 2. Currently the English Wiktionary is the only Wiktionary project using option 1.
