[edit]Coined in 1843 by Dr. Carl Schaffhäutl, from Byzantine Greek μαργαρώδης (margarṓdēs, “pearl-like”), from Ancient Greek μάργαρον (márgaron, “pearl”); see μαργαρίτης (margarítēs).
