From Medieval Latin Gallicia or Gallitia, from Old East Slavic Галичь (Galičĭ, “Halych, a city in present-day Ukraine”), ultimate origin uncertain. Halych comes from Halka (Галка) kind of bird or from Old Ukrainian/Rus - Hal' (Галь) that means "black" (чорний).
