- From 二十 (hata, “twenty”, by way of apophonic form hatsu-) + 日 (-ka, counter for days), or
- A shift from 二十歳 (hatachi, “twenty(years old)”) + 日 (-ka, counter for days):
- /ɸatat͡ɕi ka/ → */ɸat̚t͡ɕɨka/ → /ɸat͡ɕuka/ → /hat͡ɕuka/
