Etymology
Borrowed from Classical Persian خدا حافظ (xudā hāfiz), contracted from earlier خدا حافظت (xudā hāfizat), from even earlier خدا حافظت باشد (xudā hāfizat bāšad, “may God be your protector”); compare the development of English goodbye from earlier God be with ye, with similar semantics. Cognate with Hindustani خدا حافظ / ख़ुदा हाफ़िज़ (xudā hāfiz).
