Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *kaníHnas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kaníHnas, from Proto-Indo-European *ken- (“new, fresh”) (whence also कन्या (kanyā́, “girl, virgin, daughter”)) + *-iHnos. Cognate with Avestan 𐬐𐬀𐬌𐬥𐬈 (kaine, “maiden”), Latin re-cēns (“recent; fresh; young”), Ancient Greek καινός (kainós, “new”).
