From نشان (nişan, “sign, mark, target”) + ـجی (-cı, -ci, occupational suffix).

نشانجی • (nişancı)
- marksman, sharpshooter, a person skilled at hitting targets
- former title of an officer of the Ottoman Government, whose duty is to inscribe the Sultan's imperial cypher over all imperial letters-patent.
