Etymology

From Tibetan འཕགས་པ ('phags pa, literally “noble”).

Proper noun

An alphabet designed in the 1200s by the Tibetan monk and State Preceptor Drogön Chögyal Phagpa for Kublai Khan, the founder of the Yuan dynasty.
